Fees

How much does a lawyer cost?

Transparent information on fees, estimates and the expenses of an Italian legal matter.

Fees are agreed in writing, before the work begins

Italian law requires a lawyer to provide a written estimate of the cost of the matter. The estimate distinguishes the professional fee from expenses that are simply passed on, such as court fees, stamp duty and service costs.

The professional fee is set with reference to the ministerial parameters for the legal profession, adjusted for the value of the matter, its complexity and the stages of the proceedings actually carried out.

What a written estimate should contain

  • The activity covered and the stages included
  • The professional fee, net of taxes and mandatory contributions
  • Court fees, stamp duties and other disbursements
  • Fees of correspondent lawyers or technical experts, if needed
  • How and when payment falls due

A first meeting is the cheapest way to decide

In a first consultation you find out whether a claim is realistically worth pursuing. Sometimes the honest answer is that the cost outweighs the likely recovery — and knowing that early saves money.

No lawyer can promise a result. What can be promised is that you will know the cost of each step before it is taken.
